  • Apple Buys 70 Million OLED Displays for iPhone 8 from Samsung

An Apple insider told Nikkei Asian Review that the company has placed an order for bendable organic light-emitting diode (OLED) panels with Samsung Electronics for iPhone 8, that is likely to be unveiled in September this year. Therefore, UBS does not think Apple will stray far from the price point of Samsung's most expensive model at $840-850 and will keep the entry OLED model at $850-900. Whatever the case, Samsung will surely benefit from the 10 year anniversary iPhone and possibly other Apple smartphones down the road due to its dominance n global display shipments.

This order marks the first time that Apple will use OLED screens for its iPhone, ZDNet reports, marking the importance of the advanced screen technology for the future of smart devices. These panels include 5.2-inch curved OLED displays, while the other two are 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch LCD displays. The Korean conglomerate is investing the huge amount on its OLED production which will benefit Apple particularly its upcoming iPhones.

But why is Apple still depending on its arch rival for iPhone's display? Last year, Bloomberg has reported that Samsung was looking to invest around $9 billion in Samsung Display, the unit that will manufacture the iPhone's displays.

The top-end iPhone 7 Plus with 256Gb memory already costs £919 - so it isn't too much of a stretch to imagine the devices breaking the thousand-pound barrier.

Samsung has backed Apple to a corner with the reveal of the Samsung Galaxy S8.

But the major new model will apparently also pack a 3D sensor for facial recognition functionality, which is something we've heard in relation to the iPhone 8 before. To celebrate that, Apple might make iPhone 8 with a 5.2-inch OLED display. According to the outlet, all three new iPhones will come with wireless charging, and all three will be waterproof.
