Netflix standing on the threshold of 100 million subscribers

24 April, 2017, 05:38 | Author: Jeff Stephens

About 51 million of Netflix's subscribers are in the U.S.

Netflix's earnings exceeded expectations, while slower-than-expected subscriber growth was offset by a better-than-expected forecast for subscriber growth in the current quarter. Analysts and investors still consider subscriber additions to be the company's most important metric.

Growth is a very important part of Netflix's business.

Dao's attorneys at the law firm Corboy & Demetrio said they would hold a news conference on Thursday to discuss the petition. Dao was then dragged off the plane by airport security officers, a move that left him bloodied and disoriented.

The service added almost 5 million subscribers during the first three months of the year in roughly 190 countries. "But Netflix clearly had a vision before those devices became so ubiquitous". While the company will likely champion its strong earnings and revenue growth, its membership numbers missed company guidance and fell short of the highly-anticipated 100 million subscriber threshold. With almost 100 million users-which puts it significantly ahead of competitors like Amazon and Hulu-there are signs of saturation, particularly in the U.S. In the first quarter, Netflix added 1.42 million domestic users, which fell short of the anticipated 1.59 million. Netflix concluded March with nearly 48 million users outside the U.S.

Netflix plans to spend US$1 billion (S$1.4 billion) this year on marketing to attract subscribers.

Subscriber rolls, the most closely watched measure of Netflix's growth, rose by just under 5 million globally in the first quarter, behind analysts' projection of 5.18 million, according to FactSet StreetAccount. Interestingly, the company is expecting add as any as 600,000 domestic subscribers and 2.6 million global subscribers in the second quarter. However, Netflix was focused more on films and original content as it lost out on deals with the major studios.

Pachter along with the other analyst are thinking for how much time Netflix will be able to hold the line on price as movie and TV studios typically demand more money as more people subscribe to channels.

Worldwide net additions have fallen 22% year on year, though revenues in the global segment grew 62% on the year.

Netflix is spending a reported $6 billion on original content for 2017, which sounds like an astronomical figure. As part of its first-quarter earnings report Monday, Netflix responded to investor questions about Amazon's purchase of streaming rights for National Football League games next season. Netflix shares took a small dip right after the release but reversed course to 1.5% gains and fresh all-time highs later in the after-hours trading session.
