Google is killing its Drive desktop app

  • Google launches Drive File Stream, rolling out to all enterprise G Suite customers Sept. 26

With three tools - Google Drive, Drive File Stream, and Backup and Sync - now performing essentially the same tasks, users may be unsure which they should be using. You simply upload your data and photos to the cloud, sync it with the desktop app and call it a day.

The company in a blog post also said that it will stop support for Google Drive desktop app from 11th December 2017 and will completely shut down the app on 12th March 2018. The company added that enterprise customers will see Drive File Stream download links in their current Drive interfaces only if they've already enabled that capability in either Backup and Sync or Drive for Mac/PC. So by now, you don't have to use Google Drive and Google Photos to storage them in your drive, but this new Backup & Sync app will do the trick for you. It replaces the existing Google Photos desktop uploader and Drive app for Mac/PC.

The team at IBM knows that despite all the recent attention given to what AI can do, there's still so much that it can't. The IBM-MIT partnership will also study the intersection between machine learning and quantum computing .

Google has announced a new desktop application called Drive File Stream to access Google Drive files on demand. At that time, it opened an Early adopter Program for Drive File Stream. It doesn't seem this will affect users that dramatically since Backup and Sync and Drive Files Stream are practically near-identical replacements.

The company says Drive for PC or Mac is basically dead, and that users should download either of the two backup tools mentioned above as an alternative solution. To that effect, Google has announced that it will be discontinuing its Google Drive app for Mac and Windows from March 2018.

Cosmo DiNardo, Sean Kratz Appear In Court After Pennsylvania Murders
Kratz told the detectives that Dinardo picked him up at Kratz's house between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m., that day McDonough testified. DiNardo told police where to find Patrick's body, and agreed to plead guilty to four counts of first-degree murder.

For most people, the new Google Backup and Sync client is what you'll want to install. Any alterations you make to files in those apps are saved automatically to Drive and you can access them later from any of your devices. In such a case then Backup and Sync would be a good option. The app will use "almost none" of a user's hard drive space. You can think of it as an improvised version of Google Drive that migrates your data to the cloud and keeps you on the go.

The outage apparently added fuel to the misconception that Google was going to shut down Google Drive entirely. The question now is which of the two services is for you. Backup and Sync stores all the Drive content locally.
