1 public university in US News and World Report 'Best Colleges' ranking

The university is the highest-ranked Long Island institution on U.S. News & World Report's 2018 Best College national list, in a six-way tie at No. 97.

Other Virginia public universities also earned high marks: The College of William & Mary tied for No. 32 overall and sixth among public universities; Virginia Tech tied for No. 60; George Mason University tied for No. 140; and Virginia Commonwealth University tied for No. 171.

U.S. News & World Report assessed more than 1,600 four-year colleges and universities across the country, and classified 311 (190 public, 104 private, and seven for-profit) as "National Universities".

Overall, Stanford University was number one in the graduate employability rankings followed by University of California in Los Angeles and Harvard University.

Outside of the leading 10, where the U.S. claims five spots, the rankings include a relatively diverse range of universities from across the world.

In U.S. News' best value among schools category, the top in the west were Whitworth University, Pacific Lutheran University and Gonzaga.

Also, CU Boulder's undergraduate engineering program at the College of Engineering and Applied Science comes in at 16th among public institutions whose highest degree is a doctorate, or 30th overall.

Furman was ranked No. 13 in the category of "Most Innovative Schools", which is comprised of national liberal arts colleges that are making "cutting-edge changes" on their campuses.

Among national liberal-arts universities, U.S. News ranked Whitman College 41st, and the University of Puget Sound 68th - similar to their standings a year ago.

Furman also was listed in "A+ Schools for B Students" and the list of colleges that "Focus on Student Success" in the category of undergraduate research/creative projects.

Other lists in which UVA appeared included: "A Strong Commitment to Undergraduate Teaching" (tied for No. 17), schools rated highly for "Undergraduate Research/Creative Projects" (listed alphabetically), "Best Colleges for Veterans" (tied for No. 7, jumping from No. 14 a year ago), and "Top High School Guidance Counselors' Picks" (tied for No. 22).

For smaller regional institutions like Misericordia University, name recognition plays a negative factor in the rankings.

Sheffield Hallam University was placed 801st to 1,000th - the Times did not give a specific ranking. Its online graduate nursing program was ranked in a tie for ninth. MI was fourth and the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill fifth.
