"The good thing about hurricane preps is, like, the storm is bigger, but you have days and days in advance to either get out of Dodge or prepare the house and batten down the hatches", said Justin Sanak, a Largo, Florida, resident.

In Naples, near where Irma made its second landfall in southwest Florida after initially striking the Keys, winds reached as high as 142 miles per hour. Florida Gov. Rick Scott flew over the hard-hit but isolated Keys on Monday and said he saw "devastation" that included boats washed ashore and mobile homes pummeled by the storm.

As for the eastern half of the Florida Peninsula they will experience tropical storm force winds between 50-75mph, rainfall totals in the range of 6-12 inches and storm surge of 2-4 feet.

The National Hurricane Center said Irma is expected to remain powerful as it heads north along the state's Gulf Coast.

The Tampa Bay area feared a direct hit from a major hurricane, but ended up getting more of a sideways swipe from a weakened Irma. Florida's largest utility reported that the storm had knocked out power to almost three-quarters of its customers.

The storm did some $20bn to $40bn in damage to insured property as it tore through Florida, catastrophe modelling firm AIR Worldwide estimated. A storm surge of 10 feet was recorded in the Keys and a record storm surge was reported in Jacksonville that exceeded the previous high set by Hurricane Dora in 1964.

Over 2.7 million homes were without power Sunday as the storm's 100-plus miles per hour winds toppled power lines and sheared structures in the state.

It headed out to sea causing little additional damage, and was recently downgraded from a category four hurricane.

Georgia Power spokeswoman Holly Crawford said today the areas with the most power outages were coastal Glynn and Chatham counties. Significant impacts can be expected as high tide approaches, including portions of the Savannah and Charleston Metro areas.
