President Donald Trump has "great concern" about the dangers of Hurricane Irma as it batters the Florida coast and has told his team he wants to travel to the state as soon as practicable, his vice president said on Sunday.

- A personal weather station at the Marco Island Police Department reported a wind gust of 130 miles per hour, the National Weather Service said.

For days, forecasters had warned that Irma was taking dead aim at the Miami metropolitan area and the rest of Florida's Atlantic coast.

But as she watches her city and state prepare for Irma this week, she said the storm seems to be "the biggest I have ever experienced in 27 years in Florida".

The second one, in Marco Island, was a Category 3 that left the island without water and power, authorities said. So we need to simplify the tax code, reduce taxes very substantially on the middle class, and make our business tax more globally competitive.

In one of the country's largest evacuations, about 5.6 million people in Florida - more than one-quarter of the state's population - were ordered to evacuate and another 540,000 were told to leave the Georgia coast.

"This is a storm of enormous destructive power, and I ask everyone in the storm path to heed all instructions, get out of its way", the President said, echoing a tweet he posted Saturday evening.

"So, usually the eastern side of the storm has winds opposite of the winds aloft, so that's where you have high levels of (vertical) sheer", Ward said. "We've all been working together".

The westward swing in the hurricane's projected path overnight caught many on Florida's Gulf coast off guard.

"I was watching the news until Tuesday and then when I saw how strong it got, it was a no-brainer", Charlie Hernandez, Medina's brother-in-law, said.

In Fort Myers, where storm surge warnings are in effect, Evanson Ngai stayed up all night Saturday, tracking the hurricane. "Just the nervousness, trying to keep an eye on it to see if its track will change", he said.

The description of the event read: "Everyone takes their fans outside and points them at Hurricane Irma to blow it away from us". More than 6m people in Florida were urged to evacuate as Irma approached, though some chose to sit it out.

Interior Minister Gerard Collomb said the "whole government is mobilized" to help and the pillaging that hit the island in the immediate aftermath of the storm had stopped. "We've moved everything away from windows".

They also have asked the federal government to kick in 11 million meals and millions more liters (gallons) of water, plus almost 700 cases of baby supplies. "We're hoping for the best - we've bought nonperishable foods and water, and we have a flashlight".

Although wind speeds have dropped slightly, the National Weather Service said it expects Irma to "remain a powerful Category 4 or 5 hurricane during the next couple of days". The rainfall could be between 8 to 16 inches in parts of Georgia, 3-12 inches in western SC, and western North Carolina and about 2 to 5 inches in eastern Alabama and southern Tennessee, reported Heavy.

More than 180,000 people huddled in shelters in the Sunshine State and officials warned it could take weeks for electricity to be restored to everyone.

Northbound lanes of I-95 near the Georgia-South Carolina border are empty as northbound lanes are packed as people evacuate ahead of the arrival of Hurricane Irma in Yemassee, South Carolina. Schools in much of the state planned to close Monday. A tropical storm warning was issued for the first time ever in Atlanta, some 200 miles from the sea.
