Florida Keys devastated by Irma, says governor

Several deaths in the US have been blamed on the storm and authorities have sent an aircraft carrier and other Navy ships to aid search-and-rescue operations amid reports of wide devastation in the hurricane-battered Keys.

Washington, Sep 11 (Prensa Latina) Hurricane Irma fell today to category 1 and its sustained maximum winds dropped to 120 kilometers per hour as it moves along the northwestern coast of the U.S. state of Florida.

Irma however may in fact be the strongest hurricane ever observed in the Leeward Islands where places like Barbuda and Sint Maarten were utterly decimated with winds that exceeded 180 miles per hour.

According to CBS News the storm hit Marco Island Sunday afternoon while it was still at Category 3 strength, after hitting the Florida Keys Sunday morning.

Cliff Hartman spoke with CBS Miami as he took it upon himself to clear debris after Hurricane Irma swept through South Florida over the weekend.

As the storm progressed through Florida overnight, many trees were uprooted and severe damage was caused to homes. While the storm circulates, a high area of pressure will move around it, and could eventually force it to move west-northwest towards the East Coast, according to the Weather Underground.

Irma downgraded but troubles remain
A 10- to 15-foot storm surge that was predicted did not materialize; Murphy said the storm surge was between 3 and 4 feet. So there's concern that structures there might not be as strongly built as some of - more down in South Florida .

The widespread outages stretch from the Florida Keys all the way into central Florida.

"The Keys I'm very concerned about". You don't have to worry about the former hurricane-now-tropical-storm hanging around the Sunshine State much longer. "They just made sure to have plenty of food at our house, and we have a full-house generator that comes on automatically when the power goes out".

"Florida will get through this", he said.

Recovery operations are ramping up around Florida and beyond, even as the weakened vestiges of Irma dump rains across the South in such states as Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Alabama and Tennessee. "Growing up in the state, you are used to them and know how to prepare for them".

Irma remains off the west coast of Florida as it moves past Miami, but the city is being buffeted by high winds and heavy rain. With Irma, the forecast track along the Gulf coastline will expose more of Florida's cities to the stronger side of the storm.
