  • Hurricane Irma: In Storm's Path, Georgia Declares a State of Emergency

The last major hurricane to hit SC was Hugo in September 1989.

"The state is mobilizing all available resources to ensure public safety ahead of Hurricane Irma", Deal said Thursday.

S.C. Gov. Henry McMaster declared a state of emergency for SC on Wednesday to allow state agencies to coordinate their efforts in preparation of Irma's expected arrival.

America Will Confront Hurricane Irma, Others
As the storm moves toward Tampa Sunday night, utilities across Southwest Florida show more than 400,000 customers without power . The National Hurricane Center said Irma is expected to remain powerful as it heads north along the state's Gulf Coast.

State officials in North Carolina say they remain vigilant, especially in the western part of the state, where forecasters say 3 to 8 inches of rain are expected, with as much as 12 inches possible in some spots. Forecasters said tropical storm force winds could reach Georgia over the weekend and possibly SC soon after, though Irma's exact path remained uncertain still days away.

A state of emergency had previously been declared in 94 counties; it was expanded to Georgia's other 65 counties Sunday.
