More than four dozen cats that live at Ernest Hemingway's historic home in Key West, Florida, survived Hurricane Irma unharmed. "It hasn't suffered damage in any hurricane since the day it was built in 1851".

The storm brought sustained winds of up to 130 miles per hour (209 kph) and submerged the highway that connects the string of tropical islands with the rest of the state. "We all hung out together", Gonzales said.

The author lived in the house for most of the 1930s - and today it contains a whopping 55 cats, all of which are descendants of the writer's own cats.

The cats and the museum are popular with visitors to the island, which is the southernmost point in the continental United States. Forbes reported that the museum group has been in contact since the storm, noting they have supplies and generators to stay at the estate. The couple did extensive renovations to the house and grounds, including building the city's first swimming pool.

The museum is filled with Hemingway artifacts, including antique European furnishings, and mounted animal heads and skins Hemingway amassed while on African safaris and hunting trips to the American West.

Granddaughter of Ernest Hemingway, actress Mariel Hemingway, had urged Sands to evacuate with the cats, but later said she was glad they made it through safely.

Hemingway wrote some of his best-known work while living in the house, including the novel "To Have and Have Not" and the short story "The Snows of Kilimanjaro". Now they're safe. The home is constructed of 18-inch blocks of solid limestone.
