"We have about 65 percent of the state out without power", said Florida Gov. Rick Scott during a news conference.

In response, more than 50,000 workers from the USA and Canada have assembled at staging areas across the affected states, EEI wrote.

Hundreds of thousands of Southwest Florida homes and businesses remained without power Monday after ferocious Hurricane Irma plowed through the state.

Even as Irma continues to move inland as a weakened tropical storm, much of Florida's power grid is still offline in its wake, leaving 6.2 million power company customers across the state without electricity.

The company, which serves about 10 million power customers across almost half of Florida, may have to physically rebuild parts of the power system, Gould said.

Beyersdorf and Jensen left northern Wisconsin on Friday morning and raced to southern Florida to be in place ahead of Irma's impact. FPL lost power at its Riviera Center command center on Sunday - in the midst of a press conference - and was relying on backup generators on Monday.

Florida Power & Light says they don't have a timeline as to when you can expect to have your power back on because crews are still making an assessment of damages. A skeleton crew of workers will ride out the storm at each plant, he said. "Even underground facilities are going to be subject to outages because of flooding and storm surge".

First, they start by repairing any damage to power plants and the power lines that carry electricity from plants to the local substations. FPL has restored 1 million of those 5 million outages.

"I also want to caution all of our customers that it's very likely they will experience more than one outage during this event and prolonged outages may occur especially in areas, again, where we need to rebuild our system", he said.

"We think this could be the most challenging restoration in the history of the US", McGrath said.

At its St. Lucie nuclear plant about 120 miles (190 km) north of Miami, FPL reduced power at Unit 1 because of salt buildup from Irma in the switchyard, NRC spokesman Roger Hannah said.

Next, they restore power to critical facilities, such as hospitals, police and fire stations, communication facilities, water treatment plants, transportation providers, and shelters.

After that, it begins restoring large blocks of customers, in an order where the largest amount of customers can be restored in the least amount of time.

But South Miami Mayor Philip Stoddard said he was concerned about the potential for floods to damage power generators at Turkey Point, which in turn might threaten the ability of the plant to keep spent nuclear fuel rods cool. Officials had to cool down the nuclear reactors after shutting down the plant. The plant was without external power for five days, according to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
