Suspected teargas attack at Germany's Frankfurt Airport

  • Six people suffered eye irritation and breathing problems after an unknown person sprayed the check-in area of Frankfurt Airport with a mysterious gas on Monday morning

Several people have been reported to be injured after a suspected tear gas attack at check-in counters in Germany's Frankfurt airport.

People are also being treated for eye inflammation while firefighters and police were deployed to the scene as people were being treated for other injuries.

The incident took place at Frankfurt Airport's Terminal 1 on Monday afternoon, German media reported.

The motive and direct cause of the incident is yet to be ascertained.

Check-in counters were temporarily closed during the incident but have now reopened.

Now check-in process has again resumed and flight operations have become normal after no "harmful substance" was found.

Airport authorities called in the police and fire services, who cleared the area.

The terminal was partially evacuated and the entrance cordoned off, but examination of the man's luggage only revealed computer parts and a small fuel bottle for camping.
