  • Irma’s winds snap construction crane in Miami

"These tower cranes are created to withstand winds up to 145 miles per hour, not a Category 5 Hurricane", the city said in a statement last week.

City of Miami fire officials said crews couldn't mobilize to address the cranes until the winds calmed down.

"This particular crane, some of it was taken down", Jorge Perez, chief executive of The Related Group, Miami's largest developer, said by telephone.

A crane's arm is not tied down but remains loose, the deputy director of the Building Department, Maurice Pons, had said.

Elmer Gomez, a 30-year-old Guatemalan barista who refused to evacuate, said the gusts had cracked walls and windows.

Since it became clear that Irma was Florida-bound, authorities have urged residents to obey evacuation orders and to not take refuge in buildings near the cranes.

City officials warned residents living in downtown near construction sites about the possibility of cranes collapsing.

"We've been waiting for an hour", Lydia told Fox News. "This was a nuclear hurricane coming our way". The beachfront community and neighboring cities ordered residents to evacuate.

Whether or not the crane will fall or where it could land remains unknown.

The city apologized to its residents for the delay but said there were several risky areas with downed power lines and debris that need to be cleared before it was safe. "So we're supposed to die from either a heat stroke or by a giant crane?"
