Storm surges were beginning to impact Key West just before 4 a.m. ET Sunday, with water levels already two feet above normal.

Life-threatening storm surge and damaging winds are the likely main threats in the coming hours all across Florida's west coast.

FPL, the biggest power company in Florida, said more than 3.2 million of its customers were without power by 10 p.m. (0200 GMT Monday), mostly in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties.

The Category 2 storm was hundreds of miles from any land areas on Monday morning and could make a slow loop in the same general area this week, according to the National Hurricane Center. At its current speed, the storm is expected to reach Tampa late Sunday night or early Monday. They told Florida residents if they see a break in the storm, they're still not to leave their houses. An evacuation order is also in effect for the Georgia coast, while Alabama, North Carolina and SC have all declared states of emergency. Not everyone heeded the calls.

"Anyone who didn't heed the evacuation orders here in Miami Beach, it's time to bunker down", Van Dam said.

"We have a dog and there were not that many shelters that accepted dogs", the woman said. Most projections show the hurricane weakening only slightly as it travels upwards through the whole state.

Hurricane Jose Could Near US East Coast Next Week
Regardless of Jose's exact track, there will be beach concerns up and down the East Coast as the storm churns offshore. At 5 p.m., the center of the storm was about 480 miles north-northeast of Grand Turk Island.


Puerto Rico says it collaborated with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to evacuate more than 1,000 people, mainly U.S. citizens, from St. Thomas and St. Maarten. Gov. Rick Scott put particular emphasis on the dangers involved with a hurricane surge.

FPL had said on Friday it planned to shut both units at Turkey Point sometime on Saturday about 24 hours before hurricane force winds reached the plant.

FEMA Chief Brock Long said he believed the Keys and Collier County in southwest Florida took the brunt of the storm.

Irma weakened to a Category 1 storm as the massive hurricane zeroed in on the Tampa Bay region early Monday after hammering much of Florida with roof-ripping winds, gushing floodwaters and widespread power outages.

U.S. crude oil last week settled at $47.48/Bbl
Elsewhere, lost 1.94% to $1.616 a gallon, while rallied 1.11% to $2.922 per million British thermal units. Analysts at consultancy JBC Energy said those talks should prove supportive for crude prices.


Meanwhile, north of Florida, states were also preparing for Irma's arrival.
