  • German chancellor has suggested a diplomatic solution to the North Korean stand-off

The U.N. Security Council stepped up sanctions on Monday following Pyongyang's sixth nuclear test on September 3, imposing a ban on textile exports and capping oil imports.

Russian Federation and China are pushing for talks with North Korea, but the US rejects their proposal for a freeze on Pyongyang's missile and nuclear tests in exchange for a suspension of US-South Korean military drills.

"But the most important thing here is to ensure that all nations work together, present a united front and exert diplomatic pressure and economic pressure on North Korea to de-escalate".

The resolution is a water-down version of the original United States proposal, but it does ban North Korea from importing all natural gas liquids and condensates, as well as bans all textile exports and prohibits all countries from authorising new work permits for North Korean workers.

China would bear much of the responsibility for enforcing the new sanctions as it is the destination of most of North Korea's textile exports and it provides most of Pyongyang's crude oil, according to official statistics.

A statement on state news agency KNCA warned that if the USA did eventually push through harsher sanctions, North Korea would "absolutely make sure that the U.S. pays due price".

It followed up with a sixth nuclear test on September 3, its largest to date, which North Korea said was a hydrogen bomb small enough to fit onto amissile.

"The sanctions are not an end in themselves but a means to open the door to a political process", Mujerini said, calling once again on Pyongyang to start a "political dialogue" with the worldwide community in preparation for "full and verifiable nuclear disarmament" in North Korea.

While not imposing a flat-out ban on oil exports to Pyongyang, as originally proposed by the United States, the UN Council's resolution imposes a cap on crude exports at current levels of about 4 million barrels a year, and puts a cap of 2 million barrels a year on refined petroleum products.

Haley credited a "strong relationship" between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping for the unexpectedly swift success of negotiations in the last week to draft a resolution that won unanimous support from the council.

Although the entire Internet is now fixated upon Ted Cruz liking a porn tweet on Twitter, some serious stuff is going down where North Korea is concerned. She said North Korea was "begging for war".

"To change its behaviour, deter it from carrying out illegal tests and bring it back to the negotiating table", Ms Bishop said.
