The separatists have opposed Ukraine's suggestion to deploy peacekeepers in the war zone, but t he Russian president told reporters that United Nations forces could help ensure safety for global observers monitoring the ceasefire. "It would help resolve the problem in eastern Ukraine", said Putin.

A 2015 peace deal brokered by Germany and France helped reduce the scale of fighting, but clashes have continued.

A State Department official told Anadolu Agency in emailed comments that the option is "worth exploring" in order to protect civilians and as a possible means to restore Ukraine's territorial integrity.

Poroshenko said the mission should patrol the whole conflict zone including the border between Russian Federation and the separatist-held parts of Ukraine's Donetsk and Luhansk regions, which Kyiv says is used to ship weapons and military personnel in from Russian Federation.

Putin insisted during remarks to reporters that the peacekeepers be deployed between government forces and rebel-controlled areas in Ukraine's east. State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert says any force "should have a broad mandate for peace and security throughout the occupied territory in Ukraine".

Putin, answering a question after a BRICS summit in China about the possibility of the United States supplying Ukraine with heavy weapons, said it was for Washington to decide whom it sold or gave weapons to, but he warned against the move.
