Increasingly strained ties between North Atlantic Treaty Organisation and Turkey over Ankara's determination to proceed with the purchase of a Russian S-400 air defense missile system has become a fresh source of concern in Athens.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Turkey's president, announced on Tuesday that "signatures have been made" for the acquisition of the S-400 surface-to-air missile defence equipment.

One of the biggest challenges to the deal is that the radar system of the S-400 anti-ballistic missile system is not interoperable with North Atlantic Treaty Organisation radar systems.

The deal has caused concern among Turkey's North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies as the Russian air defense system is incompatible with the air defenses of other North Atlantic Treaty Organisation members.

"For this reason, we fully understand the reactions of several Western countries which are trying to put pressure on Turkey", he said.

This agreement is anor sign of rapprochement between Moscow and Ankara after serious diplomatic crisis a result of downing by Turkey of a bomber Russian flying over border with Syria, in November 2015.
