The surplus with the United States reached $28.1 billion in September, up from $24.9 billion in September of past year.

In September, China's foreign trade rose 13.6 percent to 2.46 trillion yuan, with exports up 9 percent and imports up 19.5 percent.

China's trade with North Korea slumped in September, amid United Nations sanctions aimed at deterring Kim Jong Un from pursuing his missile and nuclear-weapons program. The rise beat the poll's forecast for a 15% gain. The surge in imports shows demand in China is strong.

There are no records of seafood imports from North Korea, Huang said, while shipments of coal, iron ore and clothing all declined.

"China's imports and exports remained sound and steady and witnessed positive changes in the first three quarters", GAC said in a statement. China's falling imports from the North may provide some salve to the Trump administration, as China's trade surplus with the U.S. ballooned further last month. The surplus grew to $28.08 billion from $26.23 billion in August. It was a better performance than August, when exports rose 5.5 per cent and imports were up 13.3 per cent.

Capital Economics' China economist, Julian Evans-Pritchard, said the timing of the mid-Autumn festival this year also meant there were more working days last month than in September 2016, suggesting October figures should show a partial reversal. The customs agency said it will publish details its trade in specific products with North Korea on Oct 23.

The UN stepped up sanctions after Pyongyang fired missiles over Japan and tested its sixth and most powerful nuclear bomb last month.

China's economy has surprised analysts with its resilience so far in 2017, expanding by 6.9 percent in the first half, though most market watchers have stuck to predictions that it would lose some momentum in coming months.

Authorities are in the midst of a campaign to reduce the risks from a rapid build-up in debt produced by years of credit-fuelled stimulus, and the continued strength of imports and exports could give policymakers confidence to stick with their deleveraging push into next year.
