Paris is planning to ban all but electric cars by 2030.
The world's most visited city, Paris, plans to prohibit fossil-fueled cars from entering city before 2030.
"Transport is one of the main greenhouse gas producers... so we are planning an exit from combustion engine vehicles, or fossil-energy vehicles, by 2030", Christophe Nadjovski, an official responsible for transport policy at city council, toldFrance Info radio station. "In order to achieve the goal of an end to the thermal engines in 2030, the City has chose to invest in the development of alternatives and in the reinforcement of financial aids that allow individuals and professionals to buy clean vehicles". Najdovski stated that aim of this project was to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Paris.
The climate plan will be submitted to the Council of Paris for a vote in November.
Many Parisians do not own cars, relying on extensive public transport systems and, increasingly, fast-burgeoning networks offering bikes, scooters and low-pollution hybrid engine cars for shot-term rental.
Also in July, French President Emmanuel Macron announced that no more gasoline and diesel-powered cars would be sold in the whole of France by 2040.
The move is, in part, a pollution-reducing effort.
The city's efforts to cut carbon emissions from cars follow a rise in air pollution, with the air quality reaching an "alert threshold" a year ago according to the pollution-monitoring group Airparif. As a result, the city temporarily alternated between banning cars with even- and odd-numbered license plates. A few months later, Parisconverted the lower quays along the Seine from motorways into promenades for pedestrians and cyclists. On the Champs-Élysées, noise levels dropped 54 percent.
