  • Newsflash: SCA rules against Zuma and NPA in spy tapes appeal

On Friday morning the Supreme Court of Appeal in Bloemfontein dismissed Zuma's and the National Prosecuting Authority's appeal in what became known as the "spy tapes" case.

Zuma's lawyers conceded in a September 14 hearing that the National Prosecuting Authority's reasoning in dropping the case in 2009 was wrong but argued that the president should be allowed to make representations before a new decision to proceed with 783 charges relating to an arms deal is taken.

The New Mutants is scheduled for release on April 13th, 2018. That is, before the Demon Bear mauled its victims and all.

"It is hard to understand why the present regime at the NPA (National Prosecuting Authority) considered that the decision to terminate the prosecution could be defended", Judge Leach said.

Mr Zuma's legal team admitted in September that a previous decision to drop the charges was "irrational". A trial may also coincide with campaigning ahead of a national election in 2019 and follows a Constitutional Court ruling a year ago that the president violated his oath of office by refusing to repay taxpayer funds spent on his private home.

Speaking to the SABC soon after the SCA ruling, Holomisa said that Zuma must step down or the voters should punish the ruling party at the 2019 general elections. It was unclear when such a decision might be taken.

The president, who is accused of corruption, fraud, money-laundering and racketeering, has always insisted he is innocent.

"But what we should be looking at, there is no way that this country can trust the NPA, which is compromised by the virtue of of the fact that they joined Zuma to appeal, which means that they are not willing to prosecute".
